In August 2020, the initiative to create a new Bauhaus as part of the EU
recovery plan was introduced by President of the European Commission - Ursula
von der Leyen. In her Statement addressed to the European Parliament, the
president stressed the need to kick-start a cultural and sustainable space for
cooperation. We have now entered the first phase of the NEB. The Design Centre,
as a member of the BEDA Board, also participates in creating this unique
initiative.
The new European
Bauhaus is an initiative that goes beyond the framework of an environmental or
economic project. The objectives are to create a space for interdisciplinary
dialogue and a common design and creative platform where architects, artists,
students, scientists, engineers and designers collaborate on systemic change
through a combination of design and sustainable development. It is a movement
based on sustainability, accessibility and aesthetics. Its aim is not only to
bring people closer to the principles of the European Green Deal, but to be the
driving force behind its implementation in an attractive, innovative and
human-oriented way.
The new European Bauhaus should also take advantage of the second revolutionary megatrend of our century - digitization, which is increasingly changing the way we think and act. Computer simulations will improve design decisions in terms of resource efficiency, reuse or impact on the environment and local climate.
The movement is inseparable from the lives of citizens and the environment they live in. Cities play an important role, as places where many phenomena, interacting with people, spaces and functions occur simultaneously. The initiative aims to achieve climate neutral cities that are more liveable.
As part of the NEB, the following will be implemented:
- · European Green Deal - is a set of political initiatives of the European Commission with the overarching goal of making Europe climate neutral in 2050.
- · Renovation Wave Strategy - is a strategy for improving the energy efficiency of buildings (new standards for newly built and defining renovation standards); job creation; improving the quality of life in the city.

The implementation process has been planned in three intermingling and complementary phases:- · Design phase. The main purpose of this phase is to explore Europe's needs and challenges and to respond to them with appropriate concepts and designs for action. The phase is to be based on extensive research and an interdisciplinary dialogue between theoreticians and practitioners. Experts will take a fresh look at the current solutions to pressing problems and try to design them. By redefining what exists, they will decide in what areas and how the New European Bauhaus can accelerate, concretize and materialize good ideas. As part of the first phase, pilot programs have been planned to be carried out in various EU Member States. In addition, in the spring of 2021, the European Commission has planned the first edition of the New European Bauhaus award, which will reward inspiring initiatives related to the key foundations of NEB.
- · Delivery phase. This will be learning and implementation of the initiatives designed in the previous phase. It will begin with the establishment of at least five 'New European Bauhaus Pilots'. A platform for cooperation between all participants of the design phase will be created - "Community of Practitioners".
- · Dissemination phase. In the next phase of the New European Bauhaus, we will focus on disseminating good practice and development concepts. Mutual learning will be ensured by the exchange of examples of sustainable projects, good practices and experiences. Innovative methods, solutions and prototypes will be disseminated, which will be available to: architects, designers, students, scientists and engineers.

As part of the website, you can also share the studies and conclusions of institutions from individual European Union. The design phase of the New European Bauhaus has officially started, which will last a year. - "I want NextGenerationEU to initiate a European wave of repairs and make our Union a leader in the circular economy" - said the president of the European Commission. - “Our current consumption of raw materials, energy, water, food and land use is not sustainable. We need to change the way we treat nature, how we produce and consume, live and work, nourish and heat, travel and transport, ”she added.

October 2020 - article "A New European Bauhaus" published by Ursula von der Leyen.
The President of the European Commission defined the first outline of the initiative and its main goals. The new European Bauhaus aims to create a space for creative and interdisciplinary dialogue. Like the historic Bauhaus movement that spread around the world from Weimar, the New European Bauhaus aims to be more than just an architecture school that uses new technologies and techniques. The breakthrough success of the Bauhaus would not have been possible without the bridge to the world of art and culture or the social challenges of the time. The new European Bauhaus should unleash a dynamic of change. Should it show, we must leave the familiar paths and change our perspective.

The role of the Design Centre in a unique initiative
PPNT Gdynia | Design Centre, as a member of BEDA BOARD, participates in the phase of building the New European Bauhaus initiative by taking part in discussions during BEDA Open Doors. BEDA has been working closely with the European Commission in this regard from the very beginning. The direct expression of this dialogue was the BEDA Forum, which took place on December 10, 2020, during which there was a discussion with representatives of the Commission on the shape and impact that the initiative should have.
